A surface element may stay cold, heat only at one setting, cycle differently, overheat, or fail while other elements still work. The affected position, control response, indicator behaviour, and element type are useful observations. Do not swap components, lift the cooktop, probe voltage, or handle an element that may still be hot or energized.

The short answerTurn the affected control off, keep the cooking surface clear, and allow it to cool fully. Record which position is affected, whether it is coil, radiant glass-top, or induction, what the display or indicator shows, and whether any heat develops. Stop using the entire range for sparking, smoke, a burning-insulation smell, a shock sensation, uncontrolled heat, cracked glass, or repeated breaker trips.

Record the exact burner behaviour

  • One element stays completely cold
  • The element heats only on high or only at one setting
  • Heat cuts in and out differently from the other positions
  • The control or hot-surface indicator behaves unexpectedly
  • An induction zone does not recognize compatible cookware
  • The surface overheats or remains hot after the control is off

Do not touch the surface to confirm whether it is hot. Use the indicator and visible cooking response as observations, and keep children, pets, cookware, and combustible items away until the area has cooled.

Safe checks that avoid live components

  1. Confirm the control position. Photograph the selected setting, indicator, and display or fault code before switching it off.
  2. Identify the surface type. Record exposed coil, smooth radiant, or induction without removing or lifting anything.
  3. For induction, review cookware requirements. Follow the manufacturer manual for pan material, size, placement, and control lock. Do not use improvised electrical tests.
  4. Compare only existing observations. Tell the provider whether other elements and the oven work. Do not move an element, receptacle, control, or wiring to another position.
  5. Inspect from above after cooling. Photograph visible cracking, blistering, discolouration, or debris without scraping a damaged surface.
  6. Record recent events. Include a spill, cookware impact, outage, breaker trip, cleaning, installation, or control change.

Do not open or electrically test the range. Surface units operate from hazardous electrical supplies even when nearby functions appear normal. Stop use for smoke, sparking, a burning or melting smell, damaged wiring, a shock or tingling sensation, uncontrolled heating, a cracked glass cooking surface, or a breaker that trips again.
