A fridge that feels warm or a freezer that is cold but not freezing can mean several different things: one compartment may be affected, the temperature may be drifting slowly, or cooling may have stopped after an outage or other change. Those observations are useful. Guessing which part failed is not.

The short answerIf the fridge is not cooling or the freezer is not freezing, compare both compartments before changing any settings. Record measured temperatures when you have an appliance thermometer, keep the doors closed, protect perishable food, and make only checks that do not require moving the appliance or opening a panel. Then give a provider the model number, timeline, temperatures, sounds, frost pattern, and any recent outage or installation change.

First, identify the cooling pattern

“Not cooling” is a broad symptom. A provider can understand the request faster when you describe the pattern you can actually observe.

  • Both refrigerator and freezer are warming
  • Refrigerator is warm but freezer still feels cold
  • Freezer is softening food but refrigerator seems normal
  • Temperature rises and falls instead of staying steady
  • Cooling changed after an outage or breaker event
  • Cooling changed after the appliance was moved or loaded

These patterns do not prove a cause. Similar symptoms can come from different operating, airflow, control, sealing, or mechanical conditions. An on-site inspection may still be necessary.

If the freezer is cold but not freezing

“Cold” and “freezing” are not the same observation. When a freezer is not freezing properly, record whether ice cream is soft, ice cubes are melting together, frozen packages are thawing, or only one area seems warmer. If an appliance thermometer is already inside, note the temperature and time; do not move food repeatedly just to test different shelves.

Check that the door can close without a package or drawer in the way and that food is not pressed against visible interior vents. Keep openings brief, do not chip away ice or aim heat at an iced panel, and do not conclude that a particular component failed from the frost pattern. Protect food first and include the refrigerator-compartment temperature in the repair request, even when the freezer symptom is more obvious.

Measure what you can without disturbing the appliance

If an appliance thermometer is already inside, record the temperature and the time. Health Canada says a refrigerator should be set at or below 4°C and a freezer at or below -18°C. Its food and drinking water safety guidance also explains what to do when cooling is lost.

Do not rely only on how a shelf or container feels. If no thermometer is available, write down practical signs instead: soft frozen food, melting ice, warm drinks, condensation, or food that is no longer cold.

Keep door openings brief. Opening the doors repeatedly makes the temperature history harder to understand and reduces the time food stays cold.

Safe, non-invasive checks

  1. Confirm the appliance responds. Note whether the interior light, display, or controls are on. Do not remove covers to check electrical parts.
  2. Look at the settings. Record the displayed setting and whether it was recently changed. Avoid repeatedly turning the setting colder while waiting for help.
  3. Check the doors. Make sure no package, drawer, or shelf prevents a door from closing. Look for visible gaps without pulling or disassembling the seal.
  4. Notice airflow obstructions. Record whether food is packed tightly against visible interior vents. Do not remove an iced panel or use heat to clear it.
  5. Listen once. Note whether the usual hum or fan sound is present, absent, constant, or interrupted by clicking. A sound is an observation, not a diagnosis.
  6. Photograph frost or water. Take a picture before cleaning accessible water or moving food. The location and pattern may help a provider plan the visit.

Stop and address safety first: stop using the refrigerator if there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, repeated electrical arcing, a shock or tingling sensation, or water reaching the plug, receptacle, cord, or exposed wiring. Protect food while you arrange the next step

Cooling loss creates a separate food-safety decision. Keep the doors closed, record the time you first noticed the problem, and follow official temperature guidance rather than judging food by smell or appearance. What to tell a refrigerator repair provider

A useful request separates facts from assumptions. Include:

  • Brand, complete model number, and approximate age when known
  • Which compartment is affected and the measured temperature, if available
  • When the change began and whether it was sudden or gradual
  • Whether lights and controls respond normally
  • Any clicking, buzzing, fan, rattling, or complete silence
  • Where frost, condensation, or water is visible
  • Any recent outage, breaker trip, move, installation, or control change
  • Photos of the model label, display, frost pattern, or water location

Do not promise yourself or a provider that one observed symptom identifies a particular failed part. Ask what inspection is needed, what the diagnostic charge covers, and what information should be available before the visit.
