A washer can make normal operating sounds, react to an uneven load, or develop a new noise that needs inspection. The useful evidence is the sound, timing, movement, load, and recent change. A noise alone does not identify a failed part.

The short answerStop the cycle if the washer moves across the floor, strikes nearby objects, leaks, smells hot, or makes a violent new sound. From a safe distance, record a short video and note whether the sound occurs during filling, washing, draining, or high-speed spin. Do not hold a moving washer, open a panel, or continue testing it with repeated loads.

Describe the sound and movement separately

  • Rhythmic thumping that changes with drum speed
  • Repeated banging against the cabinet or wall
  • Grinding, scraping, squealing, clicking, or humming
  • Vibration without the washer changing position
  • Rocking, walking, or sudden movement across the floor
  • Noise only with one heavy item or a full load

Record the cycle stage and whether the drum is empty, lightly loaded, or holding one absorbent item. Do not add weight simply to recreate the symptom.

Non-invasive observations

  1. Check clearance. Look for the cabinet, hoses, or nearby objects visibly touching the washer.
  2. Observe the floor. Note obvious rocking or an uneven surface without tipping or climbing under the appliance.
  3. Review the load. Follow the manufacturer instructions for an uneven load only when the drum is safely stopped and accessible.
  4. Capture a short recording. Include the sound and enough of the washer to show movement, while staying clear of it.
  5. Look for related symptoms. Record water, a hot smell, marks on the floor, drum contact, or a new display message.

Do not restrain a moving washer: stop use when it walks, tips, strikes cabinetry, damages hoses, leaks, or produces smoke, sparking, heat, or a burning smell. Keep clear until movement stops. A stacked unit, recently moved washer, or installation concern may require additional handling information for the provider.

  • Top-load or front-load design and whether the unit is stacked
  • Brand, model number, approximate age, and installation date when known
  • Sound description and cycle stage
  • Load type and whether the symptom happens with every load
  • Whether the washer moves, leaks, smells unusual, or shows an error
  • Any recent move, floor work, installation, or hose change
